Product detailed description

It is a very effective functional mineral coating for wood protection that works on the basis of a physical phenomenon called photocatalysis. The coating is activated by daylight and has highly effective protective and self-cleaning properties. It effectively protects against wood degradation and blackening due to UV radiation and microorganisms.

FN® WOOD functional coating is highly transparent and suitable for all wooden surfaces. The thickness of the coating layer is ideally 5-20 microns, it is transparent with a slightly whitish tinge.

How Does the Photocatalytic Coating Work?

Two common substances such as air and, for example, smoke molecules or viruses and bacteria dispersed in it, coexist without problems (e.g. in a smoky room). The moment a smoke particle touches an illuminated surface coated with a photocatalytic coating, it reacts with oxygen and oxidation or combustion occurs (the surface remains cool, however, so it is a chemical reaction). Impurities in the air are then broken down into water and carbon dioxide molecules. Photocatalysis can be used to destroy organic allergens, carcinogens, viruses, bacteria, spores, and also to decompose exhaust fumes. Eventually, even the most complex organic molecules are converted into harmless simple inorganic compounds such as carbon dioxide, water and the corresponding mineral acids. Unlike various chemical preparations, the photocatalytic layer can also handle microbes, as it burns all organic matter indiscriminately.

The whole process is activated by daylight, so in interiors where the coating is used it is important that daylight falls on the surface or that the room is illuminated by special bulbs. The photoactive layer is porous and has a huge specific surface area. The process is driven by light, so unlike other products it is inexhaustible and does not introduce other substances into the environment as is the case with disinfectants etc.

What Can Photocatalytic Coating Do?

  • Highly effective against the build-up of mould, fungi and other micro-organisms
  • Maximum protection against UV radiation
  • Protects wood against greying, blackening and degradation
  • Maintains the fresh appearance of the wood for a long time
  • High level of transparency
  • High breathability and vapour permeability

Wood Benefits of FN® WOOD Functional Coating

  • Inexpensive to operate - the entire process is light driven
  • Prolonged durability and fresh appearance of wood
  • The active ingredient in the coating suspension does not harm the environment or human health
  • The layer is easily applied to the surface with a brush, low roller or spray
  • Maximum UV protection - against shearing and surface erosion

Three Rules for Applying FN® WOOD Functional Coating - What to Watch out for

1) Always mix the suspension before application - ideally use a tub not a bucket when applying. If you use a bucket, it is essential that you have someone stirring the suspension at all times. Never let the paint stand for long periods without stirring.

2) All coats must be thin - FN NANO® is not a cover coat, it is a functional coat and you must always apply thin coats to crystallize the paint properly. Never simplify the job by deciding to apply two thicker coats instead of three. The paint should be thin.

3) Never apply paint to waterproof surfaces and always apply paint at least 24 hours after painting

Appearance of Paint

The paint is highly translucent and suitable for all wooden surfaces. The photocatalytic titanium dioxide ensures that the coating functions even in minimal quantities. The thickness of the coating layer is optimally 5-20 microns. The layer formed is semi-transparent with a slightly whitish tinge. The dried coating layer has the appearance of a semi-transparent glaze. The coating can be coloured for different coloured substrates.

The coating is active immediately after exposure to daylight (exterior) or artificial light with a UVA spectrum (interior). Maximum coating efficiency is at a light wavelength of 365 nm.The coating is mature after 24 hours and fully functional after the first rain or water rinse.

Application Options

  • Wooden buildings, wooden house cladding, gazebos
  • Interior and exterior

Ingredients:

Pure water-based composite coating. Contains an untreated photocatalyst and inorganic binders. The colour variants additionally contain mineral pigments. The very high concentration of the photocatalyst (50 - 70 g/l) ensures long-lasting and flawless protection and a particularly high self-cleaning efficiency.

In line with European and world trends, the coating does not contain any organic compounds. The applied coating layer is mineral and completely safe. The coating does not release any substances into the environmentThe coating does not contain any organic compounds in accordance with European and world trends in environmental and health protection. The applied coating layer is inert and completely safe. It does not release any substances into the environment.

Application Method of FN® WOOD Functional Coating

Before each application, the coating must be shaken very thoroughly in the packaging in which it is supplied. Perfect shaking is necessary to achieve even mixing of the insoluble dust component in the coating. This is necessary to ensure the proper function of the protective coating.

It is important to keep the coating in motion. In practice, this means pouring only a small amount of the already thoroughly mixed coating before applying.
To achieve a nice appearance, always apply as thin but continuous and even a coat as possible, allowing it to dry completely before the next coat.

By spraying - optimally three coats. On smooth surfaces, the manufacturer recommends spray coating to create a thin even coat.

Roller application, optimally in three coats, is suitable for virtually all surfaces. Uniform application requires some skill.

Brush application (for hard to reach areas) optimally in three coats

layers is suitable for poorly accessible areas, deeper diffusion of the active substance and for treating areas that may be affected by mould, for example. Cover well all areas that will not be treated with the FN layer

  • Allow the layer to dry between applications
  • Do not apply in the rain, the minimum air and substrate temperature is 10 degrees Celsius
  • For a better effect, we recommend that the surfaces are thoroughly cleaned before application

Do not apply to water repellent (hydrophobic) surfaces.

The application method, tools and equipment used must be appropriate to the specific conditions, condition and requirements of the object on which the coating is to be applied.

During application of the coating, the nanoparticles of the active substance penetrate the porous structure of the substrate where they bind in a layer of inorganic binders. The still-island-like layer with a thickness of only 200 nanometres is able to provide a photocatalytic function of approximately fifty percent, which guarantees many years of functionality and effectiveness of this coating even in outdoor environments. The applied layer is frost-resistant and highly vapour permeable - thus, no damage to the substrate in winter due to frost heave.

Thinning:

Do not dilute!

Consumption:

50 - 150 ml/m2, typically 1 litre = 10m2 of protective surface in 3 coats.

Cleaning Tools:

Water - as soon as possible after use.

Packing:

Plastic containers of 1 and 5 litres

Storage:

The paint is intended for immediate consumption. Store in a cool place (10-25°C). Shake the mixture very thoroughly before use. In the case of coloured variants, it is recommended to mix the suspension with a stick mixer after shaking thoroughly in the bottle (canister) to ensure perfect distribution of the pigment in the liquid.

Safety

Observe the safety precautions in accordance with the safety data sheet and the applicable occupational safety regulations. Keep out of reach of children. Do not eat or smoke while working. Wear a respirator or other suitable respiratory protection equipment when spraying. Do not breathe spray mist, use safety glasses and a hood or other means to protect eyes, face and skin. The FN NANO company develops and manufactures nanotechnological functional coatings and self-cleaning water coatings that eliminate microorganisms (including algae), organic impurities, allergens and odors.

The effectiveness of FN NANO products was confirmed by independent studies conducted by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, the Technical University in Ostrava and other research organizations.

How do FN NANO coatings work?

The main effective component of FN NANO products are photocatalytic crystals of titanium dioxide (TiO2). After exposure to sunlight, they are activated and – in cooperation with oxygen – create a strong oxidizing environment in their surroundings, which decomposes organic molecules into oxides of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and water.

The high efficiency of coatings in the form of coatings is ensured by a patented binder that increases the functional area of the TiO2 crystals to the maximum. It prevents the further settlement of microorganisms and at the same time protects the substrate on which they are applied from UV radiation.

FN NANO preparations do not contain any organic substances and are not dangerous for the environment.

Which FN NANO product to choose?

Choose the coating according to the material of the wall and the intended function.
