When filtering the smallest particles, the nano-material used has been shown to have a filtration capacity of 99.73%, drape class II EN 14583.

How Does the Nanofiber Membrane in the SpurTex® PP Nano Masks Work?

The nanofiber is 1000 times thinner than a human hair and is invisible to the naked eye. In the European, we are experts in nanofibers and were the first in the world to develop an apparatus for the industrial production of nanofibers in 2004 in Liberec. Most manufacturers today use meltblown technology to produce nanofibers, but the European company Spur produces them by electrospinning, thanks to which they are able to produce fibers much thinner and achieve the highest filtration capabilities.

The nanofibers are spun into a nanofiber membrane, which can be imagined as a very dense net or filter. The holes in this filter are so small that an air molecule can pass through, but a bacteria, virus or allergen cannot. The nanofiber membrane has been tested to trap sub-micron particles (10 - 400 nm) and is therefore ideal for trapping a wide variety of bacteria and viruses (SARS-CoV-2 virus is reported to have a realistic size of 80 to 150 nm).

The SpurTex® PP NanoBag is made of SpurTex® PP, which is a three-layer laminate consisting of non-woven polypropylene fabrics and a specially developed active nanofiber filtration layer made of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) polymer prepared using state-of-the-art polymer solution softening technology in an electrostatic field. One of the supporting polypropylene layers is sandwiched. The SpurTex® PP nano mask does not contain any of the highly brittle borosilicate microfibers sometimes used in standard respiratory protective devices, which have negative ecological but above all health properties (their use can result in the shedding of sharp needle-like particles that are potentially carcinogenic).

How Long Can the SpurTex® Nanofiber Mask Be Worn for?

Nano masks are disposable, normally they can be worn for 3-8 hours depending on the environment you are in.

The product is declared as disposable, but in case of necessity (e.g. lack of protective respiratory equipment during epidemics or pandemics) when working in a microbially highly active environment (bacteria, viruses), the mask can be emergency sterilized using germicidal (UV-C) lamps and reused (3-5 times). The mask can also be sterilized with Disinfectant for respirators and masks spray 100 ml 70% ethanol.

Other methods of emergency sterilization should be discussed with the manufacturer. Steam sterilization, ironing or washing is not recommended.

        Maintenance of the Mask

The SpurTex® PP filter fabric nano mask is categorised as a disposable material. Its unique filtration properties are only retained for a very limited time depending on the environment in which it is used. In normal use, the nanofiber filter has a significant concentration of dangerous particles (bacteria, viruses, etc.) in the special nanofiber filter after 3-8 hours and must therefore be changed frequently in contaminated environments. The nanofiber structure itself is not treated with any antimicrobial treatment.

How to Sterilize the SpurTex® PP Nano Mask

It is not recommended to wash or iron the material. The recommended method of sterilisation is with germicidal (UV-C) lamps or an oxidative steriliser (20 minutes on each side). The mask can also be sterilized by light spraying with ethanol, but it must not get wet and must be allowed to dry completely. The mask can be sterilised in this way 1-3 times. Steam sterilization is not recommended. Other sterilisation methods should be discussed with the manufacturer.

How to Put on and Use the Mask (in Accordance with WHO Recommendations)

        Putting on the Mask

Wash hands with soap and water, wipe hands with a disposable towel and use disinfectant

Check the packaging of the mask, remove the mask from the packaging and check the integrity of the mask

Grasp the mask so that the folded edge is at the top

Grasp the elastic bands in both hands and pull taut behind the ears. Pull the mask as high as possible to the root of the nose and pull into the desired shape.

Grasp the bottom edge of the mask and pull over the mouth and chin.

          Removing the Mask

            About nano respirators

SPUR a.s. is a company based in Zlín, which in 2012 developed its own line for the production of nanofibers SPIN Line and since then has been developing filtration nanomaterials of the Spurtex series. In February 2020, it brought to the market a new type of nanomembrane, Spurtex VS, which meets the standards for the production of medical masks functional for the capture of coronavirus.

Spurtex VS material captures 70 to 95% of particles and does so at low pressure resistance (45 to 85 hPa), which makes end products highly breathable. SPUR respirators and masks meet FFP2 capturing requirements.
